For the little red toolbox challenge, 200 words set in season 1 (where we last see it).

The Brave Little Toolbox

The trooper fired and the blast threw Vila off his feet. He lay there, stunned, then whimpered as his exploring fingers felt wetness spreading over his tunic. "Teleport!"

"I'm dying!" he said as he materialised on the floor of the teleport bay.

"As are we all from the day we are born," said Avon, bending over him (and for a moment looking almost concerned, but surely not). "Unless of course your blood foams."

"Eh? Oh!" Vila sat up. "They got my toolbox," he said mournfully.

"It appears to have saved your life. A pity; it was a useful piece of equipment."

"More to the point," Blake said, "what were you doing carrying beer in it?"

"Well, it's insulated, and a bloke sometimes needs a cold one in a hot spot."

"Vila, if that was my real ale--"

But Vila wasn't listening. "I don't think I can repair it."

"There are other boxes you can use."

Yeah, thought Vila, but he'd named this one. Larry had been accommodating, a good listener, a comrade in arms, a drinking buddy, and a valued companion for a thief. He was a friend and had given his all. "But it won’t be the same."

AKA: The Day Vila Stopped Using his Box of Tricks

Vila dropped his red 'cool box' and hid while footsteps went past. He whispered into his teleport bracelet, "I'm in T-17. Where's Gan?"

Cally replied, "The intercepted message was unclear. 'death ... in twenty-four hours ... or Gan ... room T-17 ...' Perhaps he's in the next room."

Vila dutifully went to the next locked door. Nervously looking around, he opened his 'cool box' and reached in for a probe.

Cally teleported him back to the ship. Vila dropped the still beating human heart he held, looked at his bloody hand and fainted.

Gan walked into the room, holding an ice-pack to his head. "What's wrong with Vila? And what's that doing here?" He pointed down at the red 'cool box' half filled with ice, and the heart pulsing in it.

"Where have you been? We thought the Federation had you?" Cally asked.

"I had a headache, so I went for a lie-down in a disused room." Gan rolled his eyes. "Avon and Blake were at it again." He picked up the cooler and snapped it shut. "Someone will be needing this transplant. Put me down where Vila got it, will you, Cally?"

Well some times I wonder about my imagination. This week's challenge was evidently intended as a set of stories in which a red tool box should feature as part of it. My mind however had other ideas.

This one is inspired by a post [livejournal.com profile] spacefall made recently. This week's topic is the red toolbox AKA the box of tricks. What are its as yet unchronicled adventures? Did it have multiple functions (toolbox / coolbox / picnic hamper)? Why did Blake and Cally take it with them to rescue Sarkoff? Was it just full of rope and grapple for scaling castle walls, or did it also have a few cold ones in it?
